Announcements/Business

Update on Cal State Northridge (CSUN) GE Pathways Conference March 14, 2014

Attended by Mary Pedersen, Josh Machamer, Bruno Giberti

  • CSUN  partnered with Los Angeles Pierce College, the CSU Office of the Chancellor, and AAC&U on a three year long project to transform their General Education from within. Their approach—is called G.E. Paths— It takes already existing G.E. courses across the curriculum and connects them through themes such as Global Studies, Social Justice, and Health and Wellness through faculty development, student engagement, and high impact practices.

  • Students select one path and take 18 units(six or seven GE courses). Although they are encouraged to remain within one path, they can sample across the different paths. They can opt in and out, there is no obligation to continue or finish the path. The program is open to all students regardless of GPA.
  • The program currently has 200 students enrolled out of a total enrollment of 38,000.
  • Comments on GE Pathways opportunities for Cal Poly:
    - Program would need to have an integrated component and should be more than a list of courses; Possible themes to consider for the future could be Honors, Sustainability or Quantitative Reasoning.

Discussion of GE Student Survey Comments

  • A subcommittee will be created to talk further with students on GE survey.
Subcommittee Members: Emily Fogle, Katie Tool, Rachel Kramer, Josh Machamer

Discussion on General Education Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

  • The committee wants to finalize the GE PLOs so that they can go to the Academic Senate by the end of spring quarter.
  • The committee wants to ensure that Program Learning Outcomes align with the ULOs.
  • PLO subcommittee will meet again next week to finalize language.

Course Proposals - Distribution for Discussion

  •  HUM 310: Humanities in World Cultures (GE C4)
  • KINE 322: Sport and Gender (D5)
