Discussion and Comments on Draft Documents

Revised 6/8/15:  New Statement Regarding GE Course Proposal Review (PDF)

  • The last bullet (page 1) was clarified: demonstrate clear distinctions between the expectations of foundational courses (100-and 200-level) and upper-division courses (300 level).
  • Comment on bullet 2 (page 1) -   Does that course fit in the department?  Is it tied to the discipline?   Is the content of the course appropriate for the GE course/area?
  • Upper-Division Courses/Language
Suggestion to refer to catalog copy "upper-division is integrative and applied learning, synthesis and advanced inquiries across disciplines"
This would apply to GE areas C4 and D5.

Revised 6/8/15:  GE Course Renewal Process: Goals and Timelines (PDF)

  • Goal to develop a checklist in summer 2015 and have document ready by the end of fall 2015.  Review existing form from Cal State Long Beach
  • Faculty should be reminded when filling out the proposed new form - to review original GE course proposal.
  • Does this course renewal process require Senate approval? No, it is part of the GEGB charge to review courses. (Rachel Fernflores)
  • Consensus to provide outreach on process to associate deans and chairs (in future)
  • Discussion on pilot phase - We could target a particular college or use a type of volunteer open enrollment.
  • Discussion on possibility to incorporate GE course renewal into cyclical program review.

GE Retreat

We will look at possible times during possible during fall conference - Follow up with Provost's office on fall conference schedule.
Try to keep open 1-4 pm on the Wednesday of conference week.
Review self study during that time.  (September 16/after lunch 1-4 pm)
Katie Tool will look at meeting room options for that time.

Overview of GE enrollment data project (Katie Tool)

Currently, GE enrollment data has been recorded from Dashboards from 2009-2015.
We are looking at individual class enrollment, GE area enrollment, enrollment caps and average class size.  We also have stats on AP credit.  We will be doing analysis to see if we are meeting demand, where the GE bottlenecks are, and looking at trends.  The complete report will be available in the GE self study.
